Cooked Tomatoes Help Fight Prostate Cancer [Study]

The chemical that helps turn tomatoes red could also helpfight prostate cancer according a new study of lycopene.

Researchers found that lycopene has been shown to stopcancer cells from attaching to blood supply. The study also found that theprocess can delay the cells’ growth and possibly kill those cells offcompletely.

One of the British researchers involved in the study tellsthe Telegraph:

“‘This simple chemical reaction was shown to occur atlycopene concentrations that can easily be achieved by eating processedtomatoes.”

While all red vegetables contain lycopene the research foundthat tomatoes which have been processed contain a more potent version of thechemical.

More information is still needed to determine if the labreaction also occurs in the human body.

“Individuals will vary in how much lycopene their bodiesmake available to fight cancer cell growth, and the ability of lycopene to‘intercept’ in this way in the body is likely to vary between tomato products,”said the researcher.

The study was partially funded by the Heinz Corporation andresearchers have promised to continue the study to determine which environmentslycopene has the greatest effect in.

We all know alkaline batteries are really bad for the environment if you don’t dispose of them properly. The right thing to do is send them to special recycling centers but hundreds of tons end up in landfills where their toxic innards seep into the earth. Perhaps a good solution is the Energy Seed, an LED lamp post powered by trashed alkaline batteries.

The idea is to encourage people to throw their batteries away into the Energy Seed. There’s a slot for nearly every size battery. The unit combines any left over juice from all the batteries to power a super efficient LED ring.

Of course once the bins are full, we’re left with the same original problem. Somebody has to collect all those spent batteries and recycle them.

MIT students develop liquid fuel for electric cars

A group of Massachusetts Institute of Technology students may have come up with the perfect solution to our electric vehicle charging woes. Instead of relying on lithium or nickel, the new battery design stores its electrons in semi-solid flow cells. Charged particles are suspended in an electrolyte solution and pumped between compartments used for storing or releasing energy. The tech supposedly makes the batteries up to ten times more efficient than their traditional counterparts, and even more importantly, the new tech is cheaper to produce. Estimates say that the design could cut the size and expense of current batteries by as much as 50 percent.

That's all well and good, but the really cool part is that charging the cells is as simple as pumping the drained fluid out and pumping fresh charged fluid in. That means that getting on your way could take as little time as a standard gasoline fill-up, greatly reducing the inconvenience and range woes associated with modern EVs. An operational prototype is expected to be completed in the next 18 months or so.

So far the year has started off extremely well. The first week included a new job and a new semester. The birthday wishes and celebrations were more than I could have imagined.

I have a trip to Las Vegas with my brother at the end of the month and a trip to El Pescador lodge in Belize towards the late summer.

This all comes on the heels of a wonderful Christmas holiday.

My buddy Rick has been pronounced cancer-free and so has my friend Richie.

I'm adjusting pretty well to the new schedule including getting in my daily workout.

Feeling very optimistic about the year....

Budgie Family Baseball 2010

Took the kids to a Red Wings game last night along with their parents. Great time as usual - the kids dig it. After gorging ourselves on all the stadium foodstuffs, we watched an exciting game, where the Red Wings unfortunately blew a four-run lead in the top of the ninth inning.

As you can see, the kids sported their Miami Dolphins hats this time instead of their Red Wings ball caps.

Even though the Wings lost, we had a great time anyway. The San Diego Chicken was there and the boys loved that, and a great fireworks display closed out the evening.

Clambake 2010

Had our first ever clambake last night. We've had lots of discussions about doing one, but finally did it. Chris, Lindsey, Russ and Holly joined us...

Each couple had a platter with a generous serving of salt potatoes, elote' style corn-on-the cob, cajun-seaonsed Belize' shrimp with BBQ sauce, steamed and grill-finished lobster splits with a claw-meat dressing, littleneck clams and Italian sausage.

A variety of Brooklyn Ale products were served as was a Southern Tier Phin and Matt's beer. A 2008 Frei Brothers sauvignon blanc from the Russian River Valley was served as well as a bottle of 2008 Drouhin St. Veran white Burgundy. The Frei Brothers wine was excellent: good acidity and lots of lemon and grapefruit notes.

Dinner was excellent and we wrapped up with a bottle of Jameson's and brownie sundae's. That's right. A bottle of Jameson's.

I spent today recovering.

Next year's clambake will be even better.

ADK, Lake Placid, the AuSable River and Big Moose Lake...2

We spent a long weekend in the Adirondacks... we started off driving to the Lake Placid area and spent the night at one of our favorite places - the Hungry Trout. We had a drinks and dinner at RF McDougall's, (the pub at the Hungry Trout) and the room was perfect.

We fished the AuSable River in the morning. The tough conditions with low water and wind made for a tough bite. We were hoping for a trico hatch, but the wind likely prevented much of that.

Still, the scenery was spectacular and we had a great time.

Lunch was had at a great barbecue joint just outside of Saranac. Literally, some of the best ribs I've ever had.

We then made the trip to Big Moose Lake, and met up with the family. Dinner and drinks at the Red Dog, of which I'm convinced has some of the best Buffalo-style wings on the planet, and back to camp.

Booze-cruise on Saturday with great friends and pretty much chilled the rest of the weekend.

We're back home now and wrapping up with the Mid-Ohio Indy Car race...

All-in-all, a great weekend adventure...

Well, Jill and I are back from what amounts to a whirlwind couple of weeks.

We finally got married after more-or-less 18 years of being in each others lives. The closest I can track us to as far as a start point is probably May-June of 1991. I know for a fact we were hanging out a lot by December 6, 1991. That was the release date for Star Trek VI and we definitely went to that. We lived together for a while in 1992. Complete co-habitation by 1993. Bought a house together in 1999. Married on February 28th, 2009. It's been a pretty good run.

Our close family and friends met us in Key West for the "wedding weekend". I think I can say it was a huge success. We, mostly I, decided on the Florida Keys because of the world-class fishing opportunities. To me, the Keys are all about fishing and well, that's what we do. The plan was to have the wedding in Key West and follow-up with a "honeymoon" in Islamorada (I never liked that word, but I guess I have to use it). We figured on fishing in both areas.

I fell in love with the Keys pretty much instantly. I'm probably over-romanticizing it, but I really don't care. I knew I would. Definitely Key West was my favorite area. This would make sense since Key West is really the only one of the Keys done up "tourist-style". Once you get into that whole Duval Street to Mallory Square area it really is nice. The bars and drinking are legendary and the waterfront is stunning. Just walking the piers and docks is a blast. I love being around boats!

One of the by-products of having the wedding in the Keys was that it would allow me to learn the area, the "lay-of-the-land" if you will. I think I was able to do that pretty effectively. This means good things for the next time we visit.

Yet, I can see where the whole idea of "Keys Disease" comes from. First, I didn't really want to leave. The weather, the fishing, the culture -- all of it appealed to me. Second, coming back to New York has so far depressed me a bit, probably because we are on the back end of winter. I will get over my issue to an extent but I'm guessing will have a lifelong need to be part of the Florida Keys.

My next couple of posts will be some observations and recommendations on food and drink as well as fishing!

I, and my compadres are quite particular about Bourbon. We've tried 'em all and the good ones stand apart. This one impressed us...Hudson Baby Bourbon.
We picked up a bottle for the Super Bowl and were highly impressed. The best part -- it's from New York!

The whiskey was smooth, with sweet caramel notes. Jill was getting the charcoal/oak notes and we also picked up the vanilla. This is a very flavorable easy-drinking whiskey. None of us went for a splash of water on this one and we were happy we didn't. We wanted to judge this out of the bottle.

It was a huge hit and will be in permanent rotation.

Contrary to popular belief, Bourbon can be made, and called Bourbon, from anywhere in the US where it is legal to distill spirits. I know this can be troubling as one might think it impedes upon the unique nature of bourbon. I disagree, Kentucky bourbon, is the home and heart of bourbon and their kentucky water is a big part of it. Bourbon is the only American liquor and continues to develop character in people all over this fine country.

Trying to shed its reputation as “The Puppy Mill Capital of the East,” the Pennsylvania Legislature on Wednesday night passed HB 2525, a bill that will improve the lives of tens of thousands of dogs living in Pennsylvania’s puppy mills.

Introduced in May, HB 2525 doubles the cage space required for dogs in Pennsylvania’s commercial breeding facilities, prohibits wire flooring and the stacking of cages, mandates exercise and twice-yearly veterinary exams for all dogs, and requires that animals be humanely euthanized by licensed veterinarians.

Back on the Mac...

Well, I'm back on the Mac...and I love it! I picked up a black MacBook to help me get ramped up for a new job, which mainly works in a Mac environment. I really stepped away from Macs around 2000, when a job promotion took me into more of a Windows-based environment. So I kind of missed the whole OSX thing...

I mean I missed it but I didn't miss it... Macintosh computers were always my deal. I started on Apples and always had a Macintosh computer. Mostly I just wasn't active with OSX, which I'll admit, is a major deal. However, I did keep a close eye on happenings at Apple and their product releases.

Now I actually have some Mac hardware and I love it. It's like driving a Mercedes over a Ford. For the most part, you can do everything you need to on either platform, but I do prefer driving in luxury. And for the Windows part of my life -- hello boot camp! As many know, with the chipset on the new Macs, it is very easy to run a dual-boot system.

I'll be setting that up shortly and keep you posted.

But for now, it feels nice to be home.

The McGriddle Argument

The excerpt below is from a blog for Tucker Max, author of "I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell". Tucker Max's claim to fame is a life of opportunistic sex, drunkenness and partying while managing to fumble through college and grad school. He's our kind of guy, although a bit younger. All of us have had similar exploits which is why I like the guy.

On the noted topic, the Trout and I have had several discussions regarding the McDonalds McGriddle. The excerpt below is a blog conversation between Tucker Max and his good friend:

Guy 1 (Tucker Max) : "Dude--That thing looks disgusting. It has to be nasty, with the syrup shit in it. What is that?"

Guy2 : "I can only assume from your cavalier attitude that you have not yet partaken the wonderment that is the McGriddle. Let me enlighten you. What happens is the One True God grows them on trees in the Elysian Fields using a heretofore unused incantation. He then proceeds to magic them down to your local eatery where whatever Ghetto Bastard cook your McDonalds has rescued from welfare that week proceeds to wrap it in cellophane and pass it along to you, the fortunate consumer. You proceed to ingest this finery in the vain hope that your obviously overmatched taste buds can somehow grasp the delectable intricacies it is suddenly faced with. Is that egg? why yes it is, and bacon too. But wait-They didn't add... yes they did, yes they did indeed. They added cheese. And then, then my friends, they wrapped it in a sumptuous pancake bun! As your taste buds try to process that amazing piece of information, IT hits them... the syrup nugget. THE MOTHERFUCKING SYRUP NUGGET!!! It announces itself with a burst of confectionery grandiosity the likes of which your palate has never seen."

Guy1 : "So you like them?"

Guy2 : "if you EVER speak ill of the McGriddle again I will personally force-feed you one while I fuck you in the butt using the wrapper as a condom and then donkey punch you when the infused syrup nuggets explode in your mouth."
